Privacy policy

Overview
Noso is a Mac app that controls the speakers on your home network from the menu bar. It is made by Another Mad World (anothermadworld.com), called “we” and “us” here. The app runs on your Mac. We don’t run a server that receives anything from it.
This policy explains what the app and our website at noso.fm do with information. Using them is also covered by our terms of service.
What we don’t collect
The app sends us nothing. In particular:
- There is no Noso account to create or sign in to.
- There are no analytics, usage statistics or crash reports.
- There is no tracking and there are no ads.
- We never see what you play, which rooms you have, or your listening history.
Buying Noso
Noso is sold on the Mac App Store. It is free for 14 days, then a one-time in-app purchase of $9.99. It is not a subscription. Apple handles the payment and checks whether you have bought the app or are still in the trial. We never see your card details, and Apple’s privacy policy covers that part.
Your home network
Noso finds your speakers with SSDP, a standard way for devices to announce themselves on a local network, and then talks to them directly over UPnP. It reads what’s playing, volumes, groups and your Sonos favorites, and it sends the changes you ask for: play, pause, volume, sound settings, and adding or removing favorites. These messages stay on your home network.
The first time Noso looks for speakers, macOS asks whether it may use the local network. You can change that answer later in System Settings. Noso remembers your speakers’ local network addresses so it can reconnect faster next time.
What goes over the internet
Noso makes a few requests to the internet, and only these:
- SiriusXM channels. Noso downloads the public channel page at siriusxm.com/channels to build its channel list and keeps a copy on your Mac. This is the same page anyone can open in a browser. Noso never asks for your SiriusXM password; channels play through the SiriusXM account you already set up in the Sonos app.
- Pandora, only if you connect it. Noso opens a Pandora sign-in link on pandora.com in your browser. You sign in there, not in Noso. Pandora then gives Noso a token, which Noso stores in the macOS Keychain and sends only to Pandora’s servers over https, to list your stations. If you disconnect Pandora, Noso deletes the token and the saved station list.
- Artwork. Station and album images are loaded from the music services’ image servers.
- Purchase and trial checks, which go to Apple through the App Store.
These requests identify themselves as “Noso/1.0”. Noso doesn’t contact Sonos’s servers itself. Your speakers have their own connection to Sonos, which Sonos’s privacy policy covers.
What stays on your Mac
Noso saves a few things on your Mac so it opens quickly and remembers your choices:
- Copies of your favorites, the SiriusXM channel list and, if you connected Pandora, your station list.
- Your settings.
- A listening history for the Most Played row: which stations played in which room, and for how long.
- Your speakers’ local addresses, and the Pandora token in the Keychain if you connected Pandora.
In the App Store version these files live in ~/Library/Containers/fm.noso.app.mas/. None of this is sent anywhere. To remove it, delete the app and that folder.
Sharing what’s playing
When you share what’s playing, Noso hands the text to the standard macOS share sheet, and you choose where it goes. Noso sends nothing itself. The text can include a link that searches Apple Music for the song.
Our website
noso.fm is a static site hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Like any web host, Cloudflare may keep standard server logs, such as your IP address and browser type, for security and to keep the site running.
If you email us, we use your address and what you wrote only to reply to you. We don’t add you to a mailing list or share your message.
Third parties
- Apple, for the App Store, payments and purchase checks.
- Cloudflare, which hosts the website.
- Pandora, if you connect your Pandora account.
- SiriusXM, whose public channel page Noso reads.
- Sonos, whose speakers Noso controls on your network. Noso doesn’t send anything to Sonos’s servers.
Each of these has its own privacy policy for what it does.
Children’s privacy
Noso collects no personal information from anyone, children included. It isn’t directed at children under 13.
International users and the GDPR
Because the app sends us no personal data, we don’t process your data through it. The only personal data we may hold is an email you send us, which we keep to answer you and delete on request. If you’re in the European Union, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the right to ask what we hold, to correct it and to have it deleted. Email us and we’ll do it.
California and other US states
We don’t sell or share personal information, and we don’t use it for targeted advertising or profiling. The rights given by California law and by other US state privacy laws (to know, correct and delete) apply to the emails you send us, and you can use them by writing to us.
Do Not Track
Neither the app nor the website tracks you, so there is nothing for a Do Not Track signal to switch off.
Security
The Pandora token is kept in the macOS Keychain and sent only to Pandora over https. Everything else Noso stores is in its own folder on your Mac, protected by your Mac’s user account.
Changes to this policy
If what Noso does with information changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
